FCC is Seeking to Improve Security for Electronics Devices

FCC Adopts Proposal Rule Making for National Security Protections for Equipment

WASHINGTON, DC, May 24, 2024—The FCC unanimously voted to approve a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to further strengthen the security of America’s communications networks. Under the bipartisan proposal, which Chairwoman Rosenworcel and Commissioner Carr jointly spearheaded, the FCC seeks to ensure that the labs and certification bodies that review and approve electronic devices for use in the U.S. are trustworthy actors that do not present national security risks, including the risk that they would do the bidding of a foreign adversary.

The comment period will be open after the NPRM is published in the Official Journal with a comment period ascribed therein. This action will impact the operation of foreign and domestic laboratories and Telecommunication Certification Bodies (TCBs).
