The Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Directive (RTTED) 1999/5/EC and Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EC provide access to the European radio market by ensuring that products and devices can comply with spectrum protection issues. ACB is a Notified Body (Number 1588) under the United States-European Union Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA).

The Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Directive (RTTED) 1999/5/EC provides access to the European radio market by ensuring that products and devices can comply with spectrum protection issues. ACB is a Notified Body (Number 1588) under the Radio & Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Directive and the United States-European Union Mutual Recognition Agreement. ACB offers expert opinions about conformity of Radio and Telecommunications Equipment.

Effective June 12, 2016 manufacturers can select from either the RTTED or the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EC with a one year transition period whereupon the RED will have to be fully applied.

Under these Directives, Notified Bodies are empowered to render judgements about compliance to the technical requirements for radio transmitters placed in the European Union. The types of equipment include all manner of harmonized equipment, including WiFi, Bluetooth, OFDM technologies, Digital Transmission Systems (DTS), Short Range Devices (SRDs) and related products that are used for all manner of communications, command and control. Harmonized standards are generally used for showing compliance with the CE Marking requirements. Such ENs include the following specific standards for radio equipment. These are just a handful of examples of the many application-specific harmonized standards used under the EU CE marking regimen for radio equipment.

Private/Professional Mobile Equipment:

ETS 300 086 Equipment with an external antenna connector intended primarily for analogue speech

ETS 300 113 Equipment with an external antenna connector intended for transmission of data and speech

I-ETS 300 219 Radio equipment transmitting signals to initiate a specific response in the receiver

ETS 300 296 Equipment with an integral antenna connector intended primarily for analogue speech

ETS 300 341 Radio equipment with an integral antenna transmitting signals to initiate a specific response in the receiver

ETS 300 390 Equipment with an integral antenna connector intended for transmission of data and speech

ETS 300 471 Transmission of data on shared channels

EN 301 166 Equipment working on narrowband channels

EN 301 391 Access for short-range devices

Short Range Devices:

EN 300 674 Road Transport & Traffic Telematics

EN 300 220-1 Short-Range Devices 25 MHz - 1000 MHz

EN 300 220-2 Short-Range Devices 25 MHz - 1000 MHz

EN 300 330 Short range devices operating below 25 MHz

EN 300 440 Short range devices operating above 1000 MHz

EN 300 422 Wireless Microphones

EN 301 357 Cordless wideband audio devices (CEPT bands)

EN 301 091 77 GHz Automotive Radar

EN 300 761 Automatic Vehicle Ident. for railways

ETS 300 454 Wideband audio links

ETS 300 718 Avalanche Beacons

Radio Local Area Networks (RLAN) "WiFi"

ETS 300 328 2,45 GHz high-speed data systems using spread-spectrum

ETS 300 836-1 HIPERLAN 1 – Radio Type Approval and RT Conformance Test Specification

EN TBD HIPERLAN/2 - Essential Requirements under the R&TTE Directive

Compliance with the Radio requirements includes not just spectrum use and occupancy, but also Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and product safety requirements under the Low Voltage Directive (LVD)--except there is no lower voltage limit as in the case of the strict application of the LVD. All of the elements of the requirements must be satisfied in order to comply with the Radio regulations.

A Notified Body Opinion or, in the case of the Radio Equipment Directive a Type Examination, will be required to show compliance when using non-harmonized standards for equipment evaluation or when using non-harmonized frequencies.

The harmonized frequencies are, more-or-less, consistent across Western Europe and the larger CE bloc nations that operate under the European Union structure.

Our staff in the UK keeps abreast of the latest in Radio and Compliance information. Up-to-the-minute standards information is critical in this fast-paced, dynamic world economy.
